Meet Kim Richardson

I am a mother with 3 children (including twins) and 3 step-daughters. I am also a postpartum counselor, psychotherapist and certified professional life coach. I have worked as a postpartum doula.

From Saugatuck-Douglas on Lake Michigan, I work by telephone and skype – counseling, consulting, coaching and suppporting mothers and those who care for them.

I work with all moms – experienced or pregnant, new, adopting, stressed and in crisis.

I also offer consultation to families struggling with postpartum depression and health practitioners treating them.

*(Caveat: The feasibility of telephone counseling is assessed individually and is dependent on how severe your symptoms are. If I determine that you need to be seen in person, then I will act as a consultant or coach, educating and assisting you and your family to find the appropriate medical, mental and support services in your area. )

Training and Licensing

I have been providing psychotherapy for adolescents and adults since 1993. I received my Clinical Psychology degree in Cape Town, and have spent the past fifteen years practicing in South Africa and the USA. I am co-director of the Douglas Psychotherapy Center in Saugatuck-Douglas, Michigan. I have been licensed since 2001 by the state of Illinois as a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC).  I am licensed in the state of Michigan as a Licensed Professional Counselor (see box below).

In addition, I became certified as a Professional Life Coach through the International Coach Academy (an International Coach Federation accredited training institute). Life Coaching is a highly effective way to address issues that do not require psychotherapy. Coaching over the telephone and video / audio Skype or Google talk enables me to work with New Moms anywhere in the USA and the rest of the world.

Prof. License

Licensed as a Professional Clinical Counselor in Michigan, USA (Michigan LPC license in good standing #6401010578. Look up here.

Specialties

For the last 9 years, my clincial psychotherapy work has focused on new mothers and parents. I received advanced certification in PERINATAL MOOD DISORDERS
through  Postpartum Support International. I am actively involved in the Postpartum Depression Alliance of Illinois, maintaining their website, and previously staffing their Postpartum Hotline.  I am listed on Spectrum Health's Expert Postpartum Depression Provider list in Grand Rapids, MI. And co-facilitated a support group at Spectrum Health for women with PPD as well as the Tears of Joy PPD support group at Holland Hospital.

As a trained clinical psychologist and licensed Professional Counselor who treats postpartum depression, I am able to discern iif and when a new mom needs professional attention face-to-face (as opposed to long-distance). And I will make the necessary referral.

I will also consult with the family or health provider, in order to ensure the mother is given the best help available to her (given geographical and other limitations that may be in place).

Currently

I live in Saugatuck-Douglas, Michigan, USA with my husband and three children. I am step-mother to three grown women and step-grandmother to 4 little ones. I co-direct the Douglas Psychotherapy Center where I maintain a private in-office practice.

The feasibility of telephone counseling for Moms with PPD will be assessed individually and is dependent on severity of symptoms and risk. If I determine that you need to be seen in person, then I will act as a consultant or coach, educating and assisting you and your family to find the appropriate medical, mental and support services in your area.
